500mg B.D. (severe infections)

Metronidazole (Flagyl)

 

Causes marked GI upset in most patients.

Best for IV administration in severe mixed infections, with Augmentin or Zinacef.

 

Adults: 400mg TDS x 5 days

Children: 7.5mg/kg TDS (only if strongly indicated)

Telithromycin (Ketek)

 

Licensed for treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis, and tonsillitis.

Belongs to Ketolide group of antibiotics with similar properties to macrolides, but retaining activity against respiratory organisms even when resistance to macrolides exists.

Tablets: 400mg

 

Adults >12yrs:  800mg once daily x 5 days (7-10days in pneumonia)

Levofloxacin (Tavanic)

 

Licensed for treatment of acute sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis and skin and soft-tissue infections.

Tablets: 250mg, 500mg

 

Adults: 500mg daily x 10-14days

(Reduce dose in renal impairment due to renal excretion)

 

Avoid in children and growing adolescents.

May cause tendonitis. Avoid in epileptics.
